The former two-time light heavyweight world title challenger hangs them up after an amazing 12-year career.
Premier Boxing Champions would like to congratulate Andrzej Fonfara on a wonderful professional boxing career that spanned nearly 13 years. Fonfara announced his retirement on Tuesday.
“I’m fine physically, but I don’t have my usual desire to give boxing the 100 percent it deserves,” said the 31-year-old Fonfara. “I want to thank all who helped me through this crazy, great ride.”
That ride began on June 3, 2006, when Fonfara made his pro debut in his native Poland. He won a four-round decision over Miroslav Kubik in the city of Ostroleka.
Fonfara then relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where he continued to pursue his career, climbing from welterweight all the way to light heavyweight. He was a top contender at 175-pounds, twice challenging for the world title.
Fonfara enjoyed his finest year in 2015. It began in April, when he stopped Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in nine rounds. That October, he won a 12-round unanimous decision over past and future world light heavyweight champion, Nathan Cleverly. In a Fight of the Year candidate, the two warriors set CompuBox records for most combined punches landed (936) and most combined punches thrown (2,524).
Fonfara returned to Warsaw, Poland in June 2018 for his first fight in his homeland since his pro debut. He won in impressive fashion, stopping Ismayl Sillah in six rounds.
It would be the final bout of his career. Fonfara retires with a record of 30-5, 18 KOs. We wish him all the best in future endeavors.
