Antonio Tarver is the voice of ringside analysis on Spike TV. Which makes it kind of tricky when he’s actually fighting on Spike TV.
Shawn Porter to the rescue.
Porter, already back in the gym after his June 20 decision over Adrien Broner, will fill in on the August 14 Antonio Tarver-Steve Cunningham card on Spike (9 p.m. ET/PT) from Newark, New Jersey.
Porter has been a part of at least one broadcast team before.
“I remember one time going to New York. It was early in my professional career,” he said. “They had a pro fight with some kind of web show going on, so they threw me on.”
A grinder outside the ring, Porter is tapping that relentless work ethic when it comes to stepping into the booth. The regular Spike team of Chris Hanson, Jimmy Smith and Dana Jacobson won’t miss a beat.
“I know I could wing it and I’ll be OK, but in this case with it being such a big show, Spike TV, I’m backing up Antonio Tarver,” Porter said. “I have to really represent myself well, my team well and, obviously, boxing. I’ve been studying both these guys, both Tarver and Cunningham. We’ll do some practice all this weekend and probably next week as well.”
